Two nice end-of-season walleyes taken through the ice.

Steelhead are just starting to show their chrome-colored heads here in Northern Michigan.

Michigan's own Kevin VanDam is just one of the many pros who will be giving seminars on Lake Ultimate in Grand Rapids March 19 through 22.

There's still ice fishing to be had on the inland lakes of Northern Michigan.

My buds have been putting the hurt to the walleye this last week and weekend before the closer. Lake Bellaire's been good, as well Intermediate and Fife Lakes.

The jig bite's been better than the tip-up bite. Small Rapala Jigging Raps and Northland Puppet Minnows tipped with a chunk of minnow or Gulp! Minnow has been producing the best; the 'eyes have been staging off spawning areas, in water 25 to 35 feet deep.

Lake trout are still being taken on Elk Lake and Torch Lake. I hit the ice on Elk one day last week and managed to take home one laker. Several fish came into view on the sonar, and out of a few hits, I could only manage to hook that one fish. It was just the day. The fish came off the south end of Elk, off the shore of Whitewater Park, in about 95 feet of water, on a spoon tipped with a blue shiner.

There's been burbot being caught on the north end of Torch Lake. Most any type jig tipped with a minnow or sort plastic's been good. These fish have been coming from waters 35 to 90 feet.

As for steelhead, things are just starting here. Due to the precipitation last week, the rivers are higher than winter flow, but not blown out. We have plenty of snow left on the ground (about 2 feet) so there's lots more melt off to bring fish in.

And a reminder that the Lansing Boat, Sport, and Fishing show's going on at the Lansing Center, downtown Lansing, I'm there all four days (March 12 through 15) doing seminars on panfish, perch, and pike. This may not be a large show, but it's a decent show to attend as you'll get personal service from the vendors. Please, stop by and say hi. (You can check it out at www.showspan.com.)

And next week (March 19 through 22) is Michigan's largest fishing show, the Ultimate Sport Show, in Grand Rapids. Again, I'll be there hosting "Lake Ultimate", the 110,000-gallon lake that pros do seminars from, as well doing a few seminars there myself. Again, please stop by. (www.showspan.com)
